North American Transit System Ranking

Montreal did quite well with the Blue Line I think. Whereas Toronto built a stub of an east-west subway line far out in suburban North York as Line 4, Montreal built a more comprehensive second east-west line in the traditional part of the city. It's also a smaller city.
I wouldn't call Jean-Talon as far out as North York. Rue Jean Talon is only 5 km north of St. Catherine in the east end. In the west end, Snowdon is only 2 km north of St. Catherines!

But Sheppard is about 13 km from Yonge (11 km from Bloor). The Blue Line is more akin to building a line along St. Clair than Sheppard! 13 km north of St. Catherine is about the distance to Boulevard de la Concorde in Laval!

One could argue that Toronto's failure isn't building a more northerly east-west line ... as we have one at Bloor/Danforth (and another soon at Eglinton). But building a central one at Queen or King!

One advantage Montreal has, is the density in the area covered by the Metro is higher than Toronto - at least outside of the Toronto core - with less low-density sprawl.
