This is a terrific thread with sensational photos, thanks for keeping wimps like me who won't go south of Wellesley St. up to date with photos.

I also saw those and wondered what the heck they are. Some sort of communication equipment? How could an RCMP officer not know what they are? I think that was just their way of not wanting to tell you.

They're hooked up to portable generators.

They seem to be located at major gates in the fence. They are also connected to a portable power source on the ground.

My guess is some kind of motion sensor for when the gate is closed (although one would expect there are enough cops around that there'd be at least half a dozen hanging around it anyways).

These things are all over the place in the security zone. I asked a Mountie what they are but he didn't know

They're portable street lamps.

Street lamps? That's um weird. They have antennas on top of them by the looks of it. Maybe they're remotely turned on then?

^I finally found a cop who knew what they are and he said they're lights.

By noon there were at least 100 cops in Allan Gardens. This is the usual staging area for protestors.

Day 3 in the security zone and despite getting this close to the convention centre and taking 100's of pix, no one has bothered me or checked my ID.

Tourists I see are giggling with delight at the spectacle of this.

A convoy heads out to the highway. I would estimate that about 50 police officers were watching me as I was taking this shot.
