Cycling: Segregated Bike Lanes on Eglinton

There are a couple of meetings on Eglinton Connects.

All Meetings:
6:00 - 7:30 pm Information on display and staff available to answer questions
7:30 - 9:00 pm Overview presentation, followed by a Question and Answer and feedback session

MEETING 1
Monday, May 12, 2014

Ontario Science Centre, 2nd Floor
770 Don Mills Road (just south of Eglinton)

MEETING 2
Thursday, May 15, 2014

Beth Sholom Synagogue, Basement
1445 Eglinton Ave. W. (just west of Allen Rd)

The consultation will focus on:

  • Limited changes to some land use designations in the Official Plan to recognize existing land uses (e.g. Neighbourhoods to Apartment Neighbourhoods) or encourage the redevelopment and intensification of properties with mid-rise buildings (e.g. Neighbourhoods to Mixed-Use Areas).
  • Zoning amendments to permit the as-of-right development of mid-rise buildings, generally between Keele Street and Duplex Avenue.
  • Reductions in parking requirements where Eglinton Avenue is identified as an Avenue in the Official Plan, from Weston Road to Duplex Avenue, and Victoria Park Avenue to Kennedy Road.
  • Relief from some zoning regulations for Metrolinx Crosstown LRT-related buildings.
  • New Site and Area Specific policies in the Official Plan to facilitate the intensification of three Focus Areas, including tall buildings at West Side Mall and Dufferin, and mid-rise buildings at Bayview.
  • Official Plan policies to require the dedication of new public lanes and extensions to existing public lanes, at the rear of some properties fronting onto Eglinton Avenue, primarily where Eglinton Avenue is identified as an Avenue in the Official Plan.
  • Future studies required to implement the recommendations of the Eglinton Connects Planning Study, including: planning policies for five Special Station Sites, Secondary Plan studies for the Golden Mile and Don Mills Focus Areas, use of the Development Permit System, and implementation recommendations for the Mount Dennis and Kennedy Mobility Hubs.

What good is getting better bike lanes on Eglinton unless there are facilities available at the buildings (both old and new) along Eglinton (and elsewhere). It's not enough having bicycle posts, but there should be off street bicycle storage, at the minimum.

At one time, new buildings were constructed without providing automobile parking. These days, we see new buildings with parking for automobiles. It makes news when a high-rise provides for no automobile parking.

Maybe it's time for all municipalities to request that off-street (or more correctly off-sidewalk) bicycle storage. To those going to these meetings, the more they hear from us requesting off-street/off-sidewalk bicycle storage, the more likely the powers that be may do something about it.

Eglinton near Yonge has been reduced to 1 lane in each direction for a couple of weeks now, for those who are interested in the traffic impacts, it is currently reduced.
