A sunny sarturday and long 5 days week end, the inhabitants of this city seem happier than the average day.
So everyone is happy excepted in the old, hot, dirty and crowded trains of the line 4.

Why would someone want to tour such old streets that lack the free parking of the asphalt deserts that the suburbs of the 905 offer?

Because it is more pedestrian friendly, that's why! The buildings are multi-use low-rise building. None of the single-use zoned buildings that cater to automobiles.

Check out the video Melbourne "A Pedestrian Paradise". http://www.streetsblog.org/2008/05/06/streetfilm-a-pedestrian-paradise-in-melbourne/ for suggestions to improve Toronto and its suburbs.

^Great video. Wow, Melbourne really seems to be doing it right. I love the pedestrian feel, and the tree-lined streets. Makes a huge difference.

Thanks for posting that video. It's amazing how much they achieved. Alleys that were filled with trash were turned into pedestrian spaces. Those historic arcades were terrific too. It's a shame we aren't moving as fast as other cities towards the improvement of pedestrian and public spaces in general.

The first step should be getting the city to stop putting a cement cover on the tree planters which prevents water from getting in and to stop putting asphalt patches everywhere. The second step would be ensuring sidewalks are walkable. If the sidewalk plows cant plow the sidewalks are too thin. Currently many downtown sidewalks are tree, post, bin, sandwich board obstacle courses where people need to walk single file in order to pass people walking the other way.

The Melbourne video really demonstrates how badly we're failing in Toronto and North America in general. It also reminds me of how Mississauga's half-baked plan of urbanising MCC with a bunch of condo towers is doomed to fail. Kudos to Melbourne.

Yeh the reconversion of Melbrourne downtown is increadible great, even for the so called pedestrain friendly continent : Europe.
