There is more info on this proposal on the First Parliament site thread because this is the land east of Parliament Street (where the library administrative centre is) that is in the process of being swapped with the City so that the private owner can build a data centre. There is a current Development application under study, a demolition permit is in process for part of the library building and Council yesterday removed the "H" symbol from the site. Apparently all of the planning has to be arranged in next 3-4 weeks so that the data centre can be constructed ASAP. Yesterday Council voted in favour of:

1. City Council amend Zoning By-law 438-86, by removing the Holding ("h") symbol on the lands known municipally as 281 Front Street East and 43A Parliament Street.

2. City Council authorize the City Solicitor to make such stylistic and technical changes to the draft Zoning By-law Amendment as may be required.

Strange that the land in exchange gets a 5 storey data centre, when originally they were asking for a 57 storey tower....i think there is more than we know, and more density to come for the swap

They submitted a proposal for a 57 storey tower at the same as applying for a building permit for a five storey data centre. Sorry but, logic suggests the 57 storey was no more than a tactic to expedite the land swap.

Why would anyone invest in building a datacentre on such expensive land? Many large datacentres are being relocated to locations outside of Toronto where land is cheaper, power is more readily available and the site more easily secured and less prone to disruption.
