Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

I've said it before: All these shots of the rail yards dominating lakefront Toronto is a punch to the gut of nostalgia, when I was a little boy and my dad would take me to Jays' games at the Ex. Taking the subway and streetcar, walking there, and the overwhelming sprawl of the railway (always...

The 1900 photo of Old City Hall instantly reminded me of the Titanic. Awesome! *edit* Any political undertones in the above message are unintentional. I meant that at face value, that it reminds me of photos I've seen of the Titanic!

Cool! What's the history of the CityTV building? And what's it used for now, aside from getting things onto my television? (I know I can look this up but the hivemind here is way more interesting)

Young(ish) man here: I remember being a child in the 80s and going to Blue Jays games with my dad. All those railways running west of Bathurst, wow, total nostalgia. Thank you, Goldie, great way to start my morning!

I work in Pickering and the Pickering Town Centre mall recently changed its sign to a similar black lettering that lights up white at night. Curious about how they achieve that

Mustapha, I took a philosophy course at University in the early 2000s. They said the internet was like the libraries of yore. Back then, before the printing press (or even before mass publishing), there was one copy of a book and if the owner destroyed it, it was gone (Great Library of...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

What I think is awesome is the way that building on the right looks better today than it did in the 50s!

I know many of you have seen this before, but here's a map of Toronto from 1842. Love it. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4d/Toronto_Cane_map_1842.jpg I'd post the image but then it would be too small to read

Here's an even earlier view, from 1829. According to Wikipedia, the church above was the 2nd version with the one we have today completed in the 1850s. The image below shows the first version

From haunted film set to misleadingly preserved convention center (like that building, I forget its name, on the Ex Grounds). When is the "then" pic from? I should take my wife out for Open Doors

Goldie, great pic! It's amazing that the building in that picture didn't look any newer in the 30s!

What saddens me is I remember seeing marketing like that as a child in the 80s and that it lasted so long, and now it's mostly gone in the way of technological progress and flashier ways to get the word out. Only folks without the funds (like those in the indie scene) still advertise like that...

9 months later and am unsure if anyone else attempted, but I'll see what I can do The building was once a synagogue. The first sign says something along the lines of: 1st line L'Zichron Olam (lit. To Remember/Commemorate the World), probably the name of the synagogue The Second line is a...
