St Lawrence Market

Any word on what date they will be closing Market Street to cars again? And is it confirmed that after last year's council vote, this will be the last time we see cars on there?

I've looked on the St Lawrence Market website, the SLNA website, the Old Town BIA website and none of them have any information about this that I could find.

The City agreed to close it all all year at Council last fall. The BIA were not prepared and appear not to be ready yet - though they appeared to want this. They are changing their name and that may be taking up their energy/
 
I just got the Ward 13 Construction map from Cllr Moise's office - I am also trying to get the one from Ward 10. (@JasonParis asked about it! :->)

This silly squirrel at King and George (NE) crossed live and ground and now it’s swimming in pavement. The arc flash was quite spectacular, it blew 6 breakers at the nearby substation (233 Adelaide E).

Happened around 10:20am. 311 has been called supposedly but no clean up yet, just Hydro and CBC film crew on scene. Media will probably complain about the robustness of our infra but this is something of a freak accident. Power is back just now for me at least, some other spots still in the dark.

Good to see this but I find it odd that after months of lobbying to close the street ALL YEAR they seem to again be closing it only for the summer. The TEYCCmeotion last fall read:

Community Council Decision​

The Toronto and East York Community Council:

1. Directed the General Manager, Transportation Services to extend the temporary closure of Market Street between Front Street East and The Esplanade until November 30, 2024 and directed the General Manager, Transportation Services to report back by the third quarter of 2024 to the Toronto and East York Community Council with recommendations regarding closing this section of Market Street permanently.

2. Directed the General Manager, Transportation Services to work with stakeholders and the St. Lawrence Business Improvement Area to come up with solutions for deliveries and waste collection, as required, through the permitting for the closure.

Think of the squirrel like a meat balloon.

It touched the wires, blew up and then kaboom.. little bits of squirrel go everywhere.

Now.. that said the squirrel probably acted like an interrupter. When it interrupted the connection it probably tripped something that caused the substation to go offline.

Yes, of course that is what happened but my question is why this would knock power out for such a large area. It would be like having one breaker for a whole house.

The substation in question was the one located at John and Wellington.

It is a massive structure and contains most (if not all) the electrical connections for Downtown. I see your point, but unfortunately this substation is the lynch pin for the Downtown Core.

It must have jumped the first breaker and trip a larger upstream main breaker. There should be a coordination study for these breaker settings. Is the first breaker faulty or not set correctly?
