The number of cranes on the numerous skyline of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area continued their slow decline, with the third straight year of declines as fewer new cranes were assembled than the number that came down after their buildings topped off.
As of October 1, 2026, there were 239 cranes atop buildings across the GTHA, according to UrbanToronto's UTPro tracking of construction projects. While comparable to the 243 cranes from the previous two quarters, this represents a drop of 11 cranes from the same period last year, 41 fewer cranes than 2024, and 118 fewer cranes than the high-watermark set in October 2023.
For the third quarter in a row, Durham Region saw an increase in the number of cranes. Every other region has seen a decline in cranes in the last year.
The number of development projects with at least one crane has also declined across the region. The exception, once again, is Durham Region, which doubled the number of projects with cranes from 5 to 10.
Overall in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, there are 161 projects using 239 cranes to build 305 buildings. They are contributing to the construction of 73,427 dwelling units. All of these numbers have declined since last quarter.
We'll be back again in January with our next quarterly crane count update.
