Environmental performance is now embedded in nearly every aspect of city-building, from how neighbourhoods are planned to the materials and systems used in construction. As the Greater Golden Horseshoe continues to grow, questions around energy use, emissions, water management, and resilience are increasingly influencing development decisions alongside cost, design, and delivery timelines. April on UrbanToronto turns to the State of Environment, with dedicated editorial exploring how sustainability is being integrated across projects and at the scale of the city, from transit expansion and watershed planning to evolving building standards and construction practices.
State of Environment articles will examine how approaches are shifting through a mix of industry features and explainers. Topics will range from green building materials, mass timber, and low-carbon concrete to energy-efficient design, electrification, and net-zero strategies, alongside looks at certifications such as LEED and the Toronto Green Standard. Features will consider transit-oriented development, gentle density, and the role of infrastructure in reducing emissions.
Together, State of Environment articles will provide context for how sustainability considerations are influencing the projects and infrastructure reshaping the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Look for the special articles throughout the month!
