Usually when you start a company, most people are prepared for some quiet ramp-up time. Time to announce your presence, build your reputation in the market and perhaps with some good fortune, acquire a client or two. The expectation is you must invest the time required before the phone starts ringing.

In the case of consulting engineering firm Entuitive, which opened its doors on January 19, 2011, that first phone call came just three days after the new entity was founded, when it received a call from Brookfield Properties to solve a complex engineering challenge for the Manhattan West platform project in New York City. That immediate approach reflected the reputation of the founders of Entuitive, all senior and experienced people in the engineering industry.

“It was evidence of the depth of our client relationships and the trust we had developed with them,” says Brock Schroeder, CEO, Entuitive. “The people who were part of Entuitive in the early days had great experience in large, complex meaningful work and had great relationships with clients who needed solutions for those kinds of projects.”

Originally based in Toronto and Calgary in 2011, Entuitive today celebrates its 15th anniversary with more than 350 employees in five offices across Canada. The award-winning consulting engineering firm works with an international client base, delivering integrated structural engineering, building envelope, bridge engineering, construction engineering, restoration, fire engineering and sustainability and performance consulting services across hundreds of projects in the commercial, institutional, transportation, healthcare, cultural, sports and residential sectors.

“Fifteen years ago, we set out to prove that we could build a firm where fun, creativity and technical excellence weren’t mutually exclusive,” says Schroeder. “We wanted to offer a platform for people to be challenged and fulfilled while they delivered complex projects.”

Some of those complex projects are well known throughout the GTA, including the Union Station Enhancement Project, revitalizing Canada’s busiest transportation facility, serving more than 250,000 passengers daily; the much-acclaimed renovations over the past four seasons to the Rogers Centre; the steel-tied Port Lands Bridges connecting the newly-formed Villiers Island to the mainland and; Entuitive’s work on both the East and West Tower’s of the landmark Bay Adelaide Centre in the financial core.

With that project, the largest in Entuitive’s history, came many challenges which depended upon Entuitive’s innovation and solutions-focused approach, which it brings to all of its projects, some of the best known in North America. “We recently completed the North Tower as well after previously completing the East Tower,” says Barry Charnish, Principal, Structural at Entuitive. “We had worked on the West Tower and the previous scheme, so perhaps this was the largest commercial tower for Entuitive. We also completed the Brookfield Place Tower (Phase 1) in Calgary and 550 Washington, the former St. John’s Terminal and now Google’s New York City headquarters.”

To mark and celebrate its 15th anniversary, Entuitive has announced the launch this Spring of a new $10,000 annual scholarship open to structural engineering students at 22 Canadian universities, including University of Toronto, York University and Toronto Metropolitan University. While applications begin this Spring, the first awards will be granted for the Fall 2026 academic year.

“We’ve been fortunate to find success over the past 15 years and the scholarship is an important opportunity to give back to the engineering community and celebrate what has made us successful by recognizing the same traits in a deserving student each year,” says Schroeder.

Entuitive is a bold and innovative company filled with very clever people helping to build the Toronto we all experience every day. “We’ve done all of this while maintaining our top quartile performance in our industry,” says Schroeder. “This allows us to invest in our future, share our financial success with our employees and underpin our desire to be a legacy firm.”

With ambitious growth plans for the next 15 years in continuing to provide solutions, engineering expertise and services to its growing client base, Entuitive will continue to be a leading player in the complex world of engineering consulting. The phone began to ring for Entuitive on January 22, 2011, and there is every indication it will continue to ring for many years to come.

UrbanToronto will continue to follow progress on these developments, but in the meantime, you can learn more about them from our Database files, linked below.
