Heritage Toronto has announced the nominees for its 50th annual Heritage Toronto Awards, celebrating half a century of work in preserving and interpreting the city’s history. Presented by Aird & Berlis, the awards highlight contributions across Book, Public History, and Built Heritage categories.
This year’s Built Heritage nominees showcase a diverse range of projects, from facade restorations to adaptive reuses. Up to three projects from the category will be chosen for awards to be presented on October 20, along with winners in the other categories.
2 Queen Street West
At Yonge and Queen, 2 Queen Street West's exterior has been restored to its 1896 origins with more than 40,000 replica bricks, stone, and terra cotta pieces. Designed by ERA Architects and Zeidler Architecture for Cadillac Fairview, the project adds a modern three-storey glass addition set back from atop the historic facade.
321–333 King Street West - Maverick Condos Facade Restoration
The restoration of 321–333 King Street West integrates the 1856 Hughes Terrace and 1885 Gardner Boyd Buildings into the Maverick Condos base. Empire Communities worked with GBCA Architects and Clifford Restoration to rebuild facades, repair stone cornices, and reconstruct chimneys and dormers.
Deer Park Presbyterian Church
Reimagined by Diamond Schmitt Architects as a place for public and private gatherings, the Deer Park Presbyterian Church has been adapted into a restaurant and event space while preserving its 1912 Gothic facade. ERA Architects and HRI Heritage Restoration conserved the stone and terra cotta exterior, repaired slate roofs, and restored stained glass and wood doors.
FitzGerald Building at the University of Toronto
The FitzGerald Building at the University of Toronto, a 1927 Georgian Revival landmark, is now a modern administrative hub. ERA and RDH Architects led upgrades that conserved the exterior, restored select interiors, and added efficient systems, a new College Street entrance, and a rooftop terrace.
IMMIX
At Yonge and Grosvenor, QuadReal Property Group's IMMIX combines a 451-unit rental tower with restored heritage structures. architects—Alliance and ERA Architects preserved the 1864 facade at 480 Yonge and the 19th-century clock tower at 484 Yonge, complemented by a glass “ghost facade” recalling the former fire hall.
John Howard Mausoleum
The John Howard Mausoleum in High Park, designed by Toronto’s first professional architect, has been stabilized after decades of weathering. Spencer R. Higgins Architect Inc. and Clifford Restoration rebuilt the finial and pediments, reinforced the stone cairn, and conserved limestone and marble details.
Snider House
Built in 1828, the Snider House is North Toronto’s oldest surviving home and is now restored by Giannone Petricone Associates with ERA Architects. Its facade was reinstated with masonry and porches, while a glass rear addition contrasts the original brick to create light-filled interiors.
St Lawrence Market North Salvage
At St Lawrence Market North, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners with Adamson Associates Architects integrated archaeological finds into the new building. Clifford Restoration conserved unearthed stone drains and foundations, reinstalled beneath glass floor panels as visible features of the modern market.
Toronto French School - Heritage Window Conservation
At 318 Lawrence Avenue East, part of Toronto French School, 13 original stained and leaded-glass windows have been conserved. Vitreous Glassworks restored bevelled-glass triptychs and coloured leaded windows in wood and metal frames, retaining historic fabric along the south facade.
