Ontario Tables Legislation to Accelerate Home and Infrastructure Development
The Province of Ontario has introduced the Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act, 2025, alongside an additional $400 million in funding to streamline approvals and expand housing-enabling infrastructure. If passed, the legislation would harmonize development charges, simplify municipal planning processes, and extend expedited transit project measures across Ontario. The combined funding for the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund and Municipal Housing Infrastructure Fund now totals nearly $2.3 billion.
April Home Sales Down Year-Over-Year Despite Seasonal Uptick
GTA home sales rose modestly in April compared to March, but remained 23.3% below levels from the same time last year, according to the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board (TRREB). Increased inventory and cautious buyer sentiment, driven by borrowing costs and economic uncertainty, continue to weigh on overall market activity. The average selling price declined 4.1% year-over-year to $1,107,463, while greater listing supply gave buyers more leverage in negotiating prices.
GTA New Home Sales Remain Critically Low for Sixth Consecutive Month
March, 2025 marked another record low for new home sales in the GTA, with only 385 units sold, 68% below last year and 87% below the 10-year average. Both condominium and single-family home segments saw sharp year-over-year declines, as market uncertainty and construction costs continued to deter buyers. With housing starts also down more than 50% from the previous year, the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) is calling on all levels of government to reduce fees and support housing supply.
Mississauga Building Inspections Surge as City Accelerates Housing Goals
Mississauga’s building officials conducted over 104,000 inspections in 2024, a 10% increase from the previous year. With more than 95% of the 11,627 units under construction classified as high-rise apartments, inspectors are addressing increasingly complex structural and safety requirements. Recent Council approvals include major development charge reductions and an updated Official Plan targeting 370,000 new units by 2051.

Part of the City’s Grow Green Environmental Master Plan, the strategy will guide efforts in prevention, detection, and long-term management of invasive species across Brampton’s natural areas.
