Toronto is witnessing an unsettling surge in car thefts, with police reports indicating more than double the carjackings in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year. This alarming trend is juxtaposed against a backdrop of significant urban planning shifts advancing urban density and reducing car dependency. In response to these changes, ToyBx Industrial Condominium emerges as a haven for car aficionados.

Protected Major Transit Stations Areas (PMTSAs) and Major Transit Stations Areas (MTSAs) represent a transformative approach to adding more density near rapid transit facilities. PMTSAs are designated zones around future transit stations, while MTSAs cover the areas around existing stations, and new planning regulations encourage higher-density living in both cases. Transit-Oriented Communities (TOCs) realize the intent of the designations by placing high-rise, mutli-use developments, typically providing residential, commercial, and community spaces each project, within the PMTSAs and MTSAs. Those devlopments typically provide fewer parking spaces than older buildings, and reflect a shift towards reduced car ownership. Amidst these changes, ToyBx strives to offer an option for the city’s car enthusiasts.

Inspired by a passion for automobiles but with an acute awareness of urban space limitations, ToyBx is the brainchild of Ming Zee, Chris Grant, and Todd Yule. Their collective expertise in public storage and real estate development has propelled this project, transforming a 180,000ft² former distillery in Etobicoke, into a state-of-the-art car storage facility.

Located near Kipling and Evans avenues in South Etobicoke, ToyBx draws inspiration from similar ventures like RClub and Hagerty Garage and Social. This three-storey development at 20 Towns Road is designed as a bespoke solution for car collectors. Set to feature 180 customizable units that offer a range of amenities including car lifts, specialty flooring, and high-definition audio-visual systems, the facility will be fortified with robust security measures, including 24/7 monitored surveillance and controlled access, ensuring peace of mind for owners.

This unique facility will offer a range of unit sizes, catering to diverse storage needs, from compact spaces designed for a handful of cars to expansive areas for larger collections. Equipped with twin car elevators, ToyBx ensures seamless access to all levels; anticipating future expansion, the proposed Phase 2 construction includes adding a fourth floor, introducing penthouse units with panoramic views.

ToyBx has unveiled ten model suites, exemplifying the customization potential — from flooring and cabinetry to advanced climate control systems — allowing owners to craft their ideal automotive retreat. These features reflect ToyBx's goal of providing a secure, adaptable, and community-oriented space for car aficionados.

The significance of ToyBx extends beyond individual benefits to its members. It aims to take its place in Toronto's car culture. As the city embraces a future of increased public transit use and reduced car dependency, ToyBx offers a unique opportunity, providing a dedicated and secure environment for car enthusiasts to thrive.
