Before you get a skyscraper, you get a pit, so Toronto has — and has had — a lot of pits. This is probably the biggest one in town currently, located on the eastern block of Yorkville Avenue in central Toronto, where The Pemberton is just beginning its rise, starting with a return back to ground level from below the site's first crane, in the pit's northeast corner. In this image by UrbanToronto Forum contributor Johnny Au, the huge pit has recently bottomed out; deep enough to hold a 6-level underground public parking garage. After hitting ground level, a pair of conjoined towers will eventually rise from atop a 6-level podium of essentially the same size of the pit, itself concealing another parking garage, this one for residents.
