Flat expanses of earth aren't traditionally considered pretty or appealing… but what the landscape in this image by UrbanToronto Forum contributor Red Mars promises is the possibilities inherent in the redevelopment of this Alexandra Park site in Downtown Toronto. Where up until recently there were badly aging townhomes, this site just south of Kensington Market will soon be home to Tridel's MRKT, a 15-storey mixed-use project that will bring many new residents in market and affordable units, along with new retail and a renewed public realm, to this stretch of Dundas Street West. Here, lessons learned from years of experience in transforming TCHC sites like Regent Park and elsewhere in Alexandra Park should bring about a lively new community that allows more people to enjoy a higher standard of living than before, while giving a shot-in-the-arm to these blocks.
