In December, Trillium Health Partners (THP) announced the Trillium HealthWorks expansion program, which includes totally replacing the Mississauga Hospital on Hurontario Street. While construction on the new hospital itself is not expected to begin until sometime in 2025, the massive, multi-phased project has recently begun work on its first phase – a new parking structure.

The new structure is to be located to the south of the existing hospital, and southwest of the new one, on land that until recently has been used for surface parking for staff members. The new parkade will replace an existing smaller one that will eventually be demolished along with a seniors residence and a medical office building which are all close to Hurontario Street where the new hospital will be built.

Earlier this week, the staff surface lot had been cleared and levelled in preparation for the construction of the new eight-storey parking structure.

While construction of this first phase of the redevelopment is underway, the site of the new hospital is being rezoned for hospital use as it is currently zoned for residential use, as the recently purchased Camila Care Retirement Centre stands on the property. THP applied for an Enhanced Minister’s Zoning Order (EMZO) for the Mississauga Hospital property, which allows for faster municipal approvals. Without an EMZO, a lengthier municipal approval process could potentially jeopardize the project's timelines.

Mississauga City Council is on board with the EMZO request: in February they unanimously passed the EMZO motion that was brought to them by THP, and in March, the City requested an EMZO from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. THP needs the zoning in place well before so that construction of the Stantec-designed hospital can begin in 2025.

THP cares for more than 1.3 million patients annually, making it one of the busiest health care providers in the country – justifying the need for its expansion projects – which also include the expansion of the Queensway Health Centre in Etobicoke – in order to accommodate the future population increase of the area that the sites serve. THP's third site is the modern Credit Valley Hospital in the Erin Mills area of western Mississauga.

At 22 storeys and approximately 2.8 million ft² of space, the new Mississauga Hospital will be almost triple the size of the current hospital. Over 350 new beds will be added to bring the total to over 950 beds, of which over 80% will be in private rooms.

Once the new hospital is complete, the old one will be demolished, and the grounds will be landscaped with gardens and terraces for both patients and hospital staff to enjoy.
