In Toronto's Leslieville neighbourhood, the project known as 'Wonder' being developed by Graywood Developments and Alterra has made significant progress since we checked in on it nearly a year ago. The project involves the redevelopment of what used to be the Brown’s Breads and Weston Bakery building located on Eastern Avenue between Booth and Logan avenues, into an eight-storey Diamond Schmitt Architects-designed condo with retail at its base, inclusive of restored sections of the former bakery's outer walls, overseen by heritage specialists at GBCA Architects.

Our last update shared that new residential floors had begun to fill in the void behind the heritage walls, with the building's fourth floor taking shape along the west elevation over Booth Avenue. Now, a year later, the building has topped off and cladding and glazing are being installed on its exterior. The heritage walls themselves are behind white tarps currently. As restoration work on the walls wraps up, the tarp will be removed.

The lower levels of the new construction are being clad with brick, blending the building's modern sections with the bakery walls, while complementing other nearby buildings from the same era that showcase a similar style.

Beige spandrel panels are in use on other sections the building to frame window areas.

While enclosure of the upper storeys has not started yet, they are to be similarly clad in glass and spandrel for a more modern look.

Upon completion, Wonder will bring a total of 286 residential units to Leslieville, blending the formerly industrial building into the surrounding residential community through its street-fronting townhomes, and transitioning towards the street to meet the low-rise housing of the area. The Eastern Avenue frontage will also come to offer a total of 1,063m² of retail space at the base of the restored heritage facade.
