The Ivy, a new rental tower at the northeast corner of Yonge and Gloucester streets in Downtown Toronto, has recently risen above a pair of heritage buildings that it incorporates into its base. Developed by Tricon Residential and Angel Developments, the Graziani + Corazza Architects-designed tower currently has crews working on forming the 11th of its eventual 34 storeys.
An important aspect of the rising tower is its base, which is incorporating two heritage buildings, with work overseen by heritage specialists ERA Architects. Facing Yonge Street is the well loved, red brick, 1888-built Masonic Hall/Gloucester Mews building, which is being fully rehabilitated.
Facing Gloucester Street, the Charles Levey House, has, however, been disassembled and transported in panels to a warehouse to be cleaned and restored before be returned to the site and reintegrated into the base of The Ivy, but attached to a modern frame. It will nestle at the bottom of the notch that's cut into the southeast corner of the otherwise rectangular tower.
Looking east across Yonge to the project from Irwin Avenue, the tower now peeks out from behind the Masonic Hall. Above the heritage building, a work platform can be seen extending from the north half of the tower, a space on the tight site that is able to store construction materials until they are needed.
When complete, The Ivy will have 232 rental suites in a range of suite layouts, with residential accounting for 17,594 m² of the building's total gross floor area. At ground level facing Yonge Street, there will be 295 m² of retail space in a number of units.
