Collecdev has begun work on Cielo Condos, a 29-storey tower that will rise at the site of Bloor Street United Church (BSUC) at the northwest corner of Bloor and Huron streets in Downtown Toronto. First constructed in 1886, the church is to be part of the redevelopment, with the United Church of Canada getting a new head office space here, while the congregation will celebrate in a rebuilt sanctuary. The main level of the building will also include a community hall open to locals at large, while new retail space will front Bloor Street.
On March 23rd, members of the BSUC congregation and representatives of Collecdev met at the Cielo Presentation Centre located at 38 Avenue Road to mark the next stage of development. The event included an opening prayer, remarks from both groups, a look ahead at construction, and a lively meet-and-greet. The culmination of the event was the symbolic handover of the key from BSUC to Collecdev, a gesture signifying how the church has entrusted the site to the development team, confident that it will shepherd it into a new era.
Prior to the event, a fence went up around the site on March 1, and Collecdev began interior demolition of the existing building. Site prep commenced next, levelling it ahead of the shoring work to come next.
Heritage retention work has also begun now; Collecdev expects it to continue until sometime in August. It will include a steel framework being installed to support the heritage walls of the church while structural demolition, excavation, and construction take place in behind. Once the walls are fully supported, the west wall of the sanctuary will be able to be safely deconstructed. It will be completely taken down, to be completely reconstructed and refurbished once a new structure is in place, and will be a key feature of a new interior promenade atrium accessed from Bloor Street.
Collecdev expects the official ground breaking for Cielo Condos to occur in early fall. Upon completion, Cielo will stand 29 storeys and bring 284 units. The building and its collection of amenities are designed by KPMB Architects.
