Among the buildings rising in Toronto's Entertainment District, Plaza's Theatre District Residence and RIU Plaza Hotel complex is heading skywards to bring two new condo and hotel towers to the southwest corner of Adelaide and Widmer streets. The close to identical buildings, turned 90° to each other, have now reached 9 and 10-storeys above grade, wrapping up their podium levels.

The BDP Quadrangle-designed development will rise to 48 and 49-storeys, but both to 156 metres high. The 49-storey south tower is will be home exclusively to 424 condominium suites, while the 48-storey north tower — marketed as Encore at Theatre District — will feature 131 condo suites on its 25 upper floors, with the 353-room RIU Plaza Hotel taking up the first 23 floors.

The project will feature the preserved front sections of a row of Victorian townhomes on Widmer Street. They are currently starting restoration after having back extensions removed, and the podium of the south building built behind them. The Victorians will eventually be filled with retail when the project is completed.

The public realm is also being expanded, with deep pedestrian areas planned along Widmer; the eventual depth of the walking space in front of the townhomes can been made out in the image below. Upon completion, this area will be fitted with pavers and decorated with benches and landscaped with new trees.

Behind the townhomes, one can also make out a slender void between the north and south buildings' podiums which will become home to a 5th floor outdoor swimming pool that can be used by both residents and hotel guests.

With the podiums essentially formed, the two towers will soon begin to rise up above them. To complement the Victorian townhomes, the podium levels will be clad with brick.

With a transfer slab and amenities floor between the hotel and condo section of the north tower, despite a different number of floors in the tower, both will reach similar heights of just over 156 metres.
