A redevelopment of the heritage National Casket Company factory building on Niagara Street is moving along, with excavation proceeding for the Aspen Ridge's development known as West Condos. The project in Toronto's King West Village area generated controversy in its pre-construction stages, with residents of the former factory's affordable live-work units being displaced in 2019 to make way for redevelopment.

In behind the heritage structure, construction of the 12-and 14-storey, Core Architects-designed additions began early this year, with partial demolition of additions and removal of surface parking. Shoring followed in July, and continued into the following month while excavation began.

The dig is now well on its way to a depth of 3.5 storeys, revealing both caisson wall as well as pile and lagging shoring systems holding back the surrounding earth. Recent photos reveal the second row of tiebacks in progress along the shoring walls, as excavators continue to bring the pit closer to its bottom depth.

The complex's two volumes will reach heights of approximately 46 and 52 metres, and will contain a total of 320 units along with ground-floor retail upon completion.
