Hugging Toronto's northern city limits, York University's Keele Campus has been the site of significant building construction in recent years, not only including several new educational buildings, but student residences and a couple of new subway stations too. York U embarked on their latest project in March of this year—the School of Continuing Studies—under construction at the intersection of The Pond Road and James Gillies Street. Its uniquely leaning design by Perkins + Will can now be seen as the steel structure takes shape.
The five-storey building is being formed around a trio of concrete cores set to house stairs and elevators. Around the east core, the steel skeleton now outlines the building's full height and its north-leaning massing. By the time the steel structure reaches the centre core though, it's standing straight up. By the time the remaining exposed concrete core to the west is surrounded by steel, the lean will be to the south.
With much of the structure in place, decking has been installed above the second floor's steel girders to support the pouring of a concrete slab. This process will be repeated on all remaining levels, with the next steps to involve the installation of the building's uniquely tesselated exterior cladding.
The 97,000-square-foot building's educational and faculty spaces are housed across six levels, five above grade and one below. The basement level, or floor "00", is to include a mix of classroom, cafeteria, and mechanical rooms. This double-height space will include open sections above, allowing natural light to penetrate from the expansive ground floor windows. Levels 1 through 4 will largely house classroom space, with the fifth floor to contain a mix of offices, meeting spaces, workspaces for instructors, and a staff lounge.
The new facility is targeted to open for the Fall 2021 school semester, providing expanded access to the English-language university pathways that support international students and new Canadians, and innovative programming to support professionals looking to pursue careers in emerging and in-demand fields.
