This week's Throwback Thursday compares two Midtown Toronto views captured just over a year apart. The view faces north from the Lola Road bridge just west of Yonge Street, which spans over the open-cut subway trench between Davisville and Eglinton stations. In June, 2019, the recently topped-out Art Shoppe Condos is at its final 28-storey, 99-metre height at the corner of Yonge and Soudan, with lots to finish on it still. Further north, within the cluster of tall towers surrounding Yonge and Eglinton, the new 2221 Yonge Condos tower can just be made out rising several levels above Yonge.

Fast forward to July, 2020, and an evening view from the bridge shows the contrasting black and white architectsAlliance-designed details of the largely-complete Art Shoppe project. To the north, 2221 Yonge now stands just shy of its final 58-storey, 192.6-metre height. Designed by Pei Partnership Architects—a firm run by the sons of the recently deceased legendary architect I.M. Pei—the tower is now the second-tallest building north of Toronto's Bloor-Yorkville neighbourhood, and is expected to wrap up construction in 2021.

We will return next week with another look at the changing face of Toronto. In the meantime, you can submit your own Throwback Thursday comparisons in our dedicated Forum thread for your chance to be featured in next week's edition.
