Toronto design studio RDH Architects has received international recognition for the 2018-opened Springdale Library and Komagata Maru Park in Brampton. The Chicago-based Commercial Interior Design Association honoured the new library branch with the International Interior Design Award, which recognizes excellence in library interior design projects around the world.

The 25,000-square-foot Springdale Library contains areas dedicated to quiet study, programming, and special activities. The interior features an abundance of natural light, entering through a dramatic oculus. It is framed by a commercial plaza to the east, Bramalea Road to the south, and a ravine to the north and west.

The adjacent park was designed in collaboration with NAK Design Strategies and serves as an exterior extension of the community-oriented spaces inside the library. The green space includes contemplative gardens, reflective pools and a play area organized around three-dimensional text spelling out "imagine".

"We are grateful for this honour from the IIDA and the ALA. It is a testament to the Brampton Library, to the City, and to our team and collaborators—who supported this vision for a high-quality community gathering place," said Tyler Sharp, RDHA Principal and Design Director. "We look forward to the time that we can reunite and enjoy the library and park again."

Springdale Library has racked up a number of awards, some even before the project had completed. In 2015, it received a Canadian Architect Award of Excellence. After opening, the library was presented with the Ontario Library Association Library Building Award, a Brampton Urban Design Award of Excellence and an Ontario CISC Steel Design Award. Springdale Library and Komagata Maru Park also received a National Urban Design Certificate of Merit this year.
