Construction is moving along at the site of Alterra Group of Companies' 159SW Condos, a new high-rise development named for its location at the southwest corner of Sherbourne and Wellesley at the edge of Toronto’s St. James Town neighbourhood. It’s been almost eight months since we last checked in on the site of the 36-storey, Richmond Architects-designed tower, back when crews were forming the building's underground parking levels. Work has since risen above grade, with the building's podium now taking shape.
The podium is now making its impact felt at the intersection’s southwest corner, standing three storeys tall. Forming of the fourth and final podium level is now in progress and, once complete, will be followed by the first of the tower floors. The roof of this final level will eventually support space for outdoor amenities serving the new condominium units.
The tower floors are expected to rise at a much faster rate, with the combination of smaller floor area footprints and repeating floorplate layouts to allow crews to form tower floors at a much faster pace. At the current rate of construction, the first of these tower floors should materialize above the podium in the coming weeks.
Once construction wraps up, the project will introduce 360 new condominium units to the St. James Town neighbourhood, as well as new ground-floor retail space with frontages facing both Sherbourne and Wellesley streets.
