Cyclists can now travel an uninterrupted 22 kilometres along Toronto's Waterfront on the Martin Goodman Trail, as a "missing link" opened today that closes the gap between two sections of the route at the edge of the Port Lands. The opening was attended this morning by Ward 6 Councillor James Pasternak, Chair of the City of Toronto's Infrastructure and Environment Committee, Ward 14 Councillor Paula Fletcher, representatives from the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), and the public, with a ribbon cutting officially marking the project's completion.

The new 740-metre-long, 4-metre wide asphalt section runs along the south side of Unwin Avenue, completing the Martin Goodman Trail between the Leslie Street and Outer Harbour Marina Road intersections. The project, part of Waterfront Toronto’s Quick Starts program for several projects along the waterfront, started construction last Summer, and finished up last week just in time for today's opening.

Set well back from Unwin Avenue's paved shoulder, the trail's alignment was chosen with safety in mind, while also factoring in the ecology of the area at the north end of Tommy Thompson Park, known as The Baselands. Along the route, riders will pass a resting area, habitat enhancements, low-impact stormwater management features, and a mix of native trees and shrubs.

Councillor Paula Fletcher stated at the event, "Opening this beautiful and important missing link on the Martin Goodman Trail means that users, including families and children, finally have a safe route that's away from the busy roadway. East end residents are now fully connected via the waterfront trail to downtown and all the way to the west end of the city and beyond."
