The December 2017 opening of Vaughan Metropolitan Centre subway station at the new northwestern end of the Yonge-University line, is bringing significant new investment to the Toronto suburb of Vaughan. Pre-dating the station's opening, the Cortel Group was the first developer to bring new high-rise buildings to the area at Expo City, a high-density community taking shape just a few blocks east of the station. Following on the heels of the completed first two towers, construction is moving along for the AJ Tregebov Architect-designed third and fourth towers. Known as Nord Condos, the project celebrated a recent milestone last Friday with a topping off party to mark the buildings reaching their final 38-storey heights.
Celebrations were held just east of the construction site in the Riviera Events & Convention Centre, where construction crews and various others that helped make the project a reality were treated to a barbecue luncheon. After the festivities, we toured through the development.
The podium that joins the two towers will house a mix of amenity space and residential units, including a collection of two-storey townhomes at grade. At the rear of the building, a look inside one of these townhomes reveals that interiors are still in a raw state, with plumbing, electrical conduits, and communications cables visible in advance of walls going in.
While townhome residents will have their own private entrances directly into their suites, the majority of residents entering the building on foot will pass through the ground floor lobby on the south side of the building. Progress is a bit further along in this space, with framing and drywall installation now in full swing.
Just west of the lobby, residential amenity areas now taking shape include a side-by-side ground-floor gym and yoga space.
On the podium's second floor, more amenities will be available to building residents. In the image below, a party room amenity is taking shape, with drywall, paint, and furnishings now hinting at how the space will look once construction is complete.
Next to the party room, an indoor pool is housed in a volume with canted glazed walls that fills the space with natural light and offers views down to street level.
The pool amenity will connect to a landscaped terrace atop the lower podium roof, also still in an unfinished state.
Elsewhere in the podium, suite finishing is well underway, including the west tower podium suite shown below. Here, most finishes are in place, including high-end laminate flooring and a finished kitchen featuring a unique mid-backsplash window.
Moving up to the mechanical penthouse roof atop the west tower, we get a better view of the twin east tower, where cladding installation is now just four levels shy of the top.
To the immediate west of the towers, a new pavilion and park are being built in conjunction with a four-level underground garage, part of the upcoming 5th tower in the community, the 60-storey CG Tower. Shoring and excavation are well underway for this new garage just north of the future tower footprint.
