The rapid ascent of Toronto's South Core skyline is primed to continue, as Tridel's Ten York Street Condos prepares to begin its climb to an eventual height of 65 storeys in the burgeoning area's skyline. In its current state of construction at just over three double-height storeys, the Wallman Architects-designed development's podium structure is already turning the heads of passing motorists on the Gardiner Expressway and its Yonge-Bay-York offramp.

The striking wedge-shaped podium is now fully formed, the last amenity level is being formed now, and work will soon begin on the first of many repeating tower floor layouts. Unlike the complicated podium levels below which require complex one-off formwork for lobby and amenity spaces, the tower floor layout will remain largely unchanged for most of the height of the building, allowing fly forms to used repeatedly. After fly forms are put in place on one level and the concrete is poured and sufficiently cured, the tower crane can be used to extract the forms and hoist (or 'fly') them up a level where they will be used again. This allows speedy construction of the successive floors.

Photos from last week reveal that work was under way on the floor slab above the podium's east end. Elsewhere, the first walls of the tower's last amenity floor have been poured, while nearby, rebar has been installed for columns, forms are being placed for walls, and concrete pouring is in progress.

At a height of 224 metres (735 feet), Ten York will have a prominent impact on the Toronto skyline from all the familiar postcard angles on the waterfront and the Islands. (The image below misses a number of recently constructed towers such as the Ïce Condo towers just to the north of Ten York.) The tower will bring 725 new homes to the South Core, all located steps from Union Station and the Financial District to the north and the Harbourfront district to the south. Access will be further improved via a nearby connection to the PATH system in the new Sun Life Financial Tower across the street to the east, which will open before construction wraps up for Ten York.
