The ongoing renovation and expansion of BMO Field continues to progress in Exhibition Place. Led by Maple Leaf Sports + Entertainment, builder PCL Constructors, and architects Gensler, the project's first phase was completed last spring, adding 8,400 new seats to the stadium, as well as a new video display screen, washrooms, and concession stands.
Earlier this month, we provided a construction update on the stadium's three roof sections highlighting the then-current status of the project. Since our recent update, the remaining pre-assembled sections of the east and west roof structures have been hoisted into place and now stand supported by blue-painted temporary support masts. Once the roof sections are connected via a truss system, the loads will be fully supported by large 'super columns' at each end, and the temporary supports will be removed.
As assembly work continues on the larger east and west roof structures, crews are preparing for the installation of the south roof structure, which will be assembled in a large single section and then lifted into place by a 600-ton crane.
At the opposite end of the field, the former north stands have been removed to make way for the expanded playing surface needed for CFL football play, as the stadium will soon be home to the Toronto Argonauts as well as MLS' FC Toronto. In addition to the lengthening of the playing surface, the renovations will add a new Argos locker room and renovations to the visiting team locker room to handle the needs of both soccer and football teams. Shoring activity is now underway at the former site of the north stands, which will be rebuilt in a new configuration several metres north of their previous position.
Work on the second phase of upgrades is expected to continue well into the year, and the Toronto FC will begin the 2016 MLS season with eight consecutive road games, allowing work to conclude on the upgraded stadium. The first home game at the re-opened BMO Field is currently scheduled to take place on May 7th vs FC Dallas .
