Over one century after the opening of Women's College Hospital, the rebuilding of the hospital near Bay and College is closing in on the final stages of its complete redevelopment. Designed by Perkins Eastman Black and IBI Group Architects, the $350M 400k square foot facility consists of an L-shaped reinforced concrete nine-storey structure surrounding a two-storey steel-frame pavilion fronting on Grenville Street.
The rebuilt facility will focus on consolidating primary care, chronic disease management, surgical services, diagnostics and mental health programs, all delivered on an ambulatory and out-patient basis, meaning that the facility will have no patient beds. Women's College Hospital will also co-locate research, education and patient care spaces help improve communication between researchers, educators and clinicians.
The two-storey pavilion located at the south side of the building will be the site of the main entrance and pick-up/drop-off area serving the hospital. This section of the building differentiates itself from the surrounding structure with a striking fuchsia-coloured glass-clad box, adding a vibrant shot of colour the the largely pale blues, greens and grays of the Bay and College area.
Trees were recently installed on the green roof above the pavilion, brining life to the corner.
To the west of the new Women's College Hospital, former site of an Art Deco wing which was demolished in 2013, will soon be an inviting entry area and garden.
While the second phase addition is structurally complete, there are still finishing touches on the exterior and much interior work to accomplish before the project's projected completion date of April 2016.
