Established in 1967, Humber is one of Canada’s leading postsecondary institutions, serving 27,000 full-time students and 56,000 continuing education registrants. Humber College will soon reinforce its internationally recognized reputation for quality learning with two new additions on its Lakeshore campus in Etobicoke. Last month, a ground breaking ceremony celebrated the start for the future Welcome Centre as well as the new Athletic Centre.

The Welcome Centre is designed by Moriyama & Teshima according to LEED Silver Standards and will house a variety of student services, including Registration, Financial Aid, Peer Tutoring, Student Access, Counselling, the Health Centre and the Student Support Centre in over 45,000 square feet (4181 m2)  divided over four storeys.

In collaboration with the City of Toronto and the Lakeshore community, the neighbourhood will have a strong presence in the new building through an interpretive centre that chronicles the history and Aboriginal heritage of the campus property. Parking will be concentrated in an underground level with only 10 spots on the surface, preserving the greenery around the edifice. The completion of the building is currently scheduled for spring 2016.

The Welcome Centre is to be located at the main entrance to the campus, on the south-west corner of Lake Shore Blvd. and Colonel Samuel Smith Park Drive, in an old orchard. Immediately south of the Welcome Centre will be a new Toronto Catholic District School Board primary school.

In the image seen above, the old orchard is the treed area just below the word "Colonel" in centre-left. The bulk of the Lakeshore Campus' buildings are divided in two, with the East Campus buildings above the words "Colonel Samuel Smith Park Dr.", and the West Campus building at centre-right with the large parking lot behind it. The park itself is in the background, along the lake. Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School and Regional Arts Centre, which can be seen just behind the running track, also shares the site.

At the lower-right corner of the image in front of the word 'Lake' is where the second building underway down here is located, the new 24,000 square foot Athletics Centre.

It will be built on the north side of Lake Shore Boulevard east of Twenty-Fourth Street, slightly outside of the current campus enclosure. The three-storey facility, which is also designed according to LEED Silver standards under the direction of Moriyama & Teshima, will replace an existing 2-storey high retail building and its adjacent parking lot. The centre will provide fully-equipped cardio and weight equipment along with group exercise studios, change rooms and showers. Scheduled for completion in winter 2016, residents will be welcome to use the facility through a community membership plan.
