Construction is progressing significantly at the site of H&W Development Corp.'s Fontana, a four-building condominium development on South Town Centre Boulevard, just south of Highway 7 in Markham's emerging downtown. The Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects-designed project features four towers ranging in height from nine to fifteen storeys. Two of the buildings have topped off and had their cranes removed, while the last two are fast rising.
The development is contributing to a growing pocket of density in the largely suburban city, with densely clustered buildings and urban streetwalls. Fontana extends the existing streetwall of South Town Centre Boulevard, while creating new ones along Clegg Road and Cedarland Drive.
The towers fronting on South Town Centre Boulevard have both been topped off since Summer 2014, while cladding work was largely complete by the end of the year. The two eastern towers, fronting on to Clegg Road to the north and Cedarland Drive to the south, still have their cranes.
The southern tower is approaching its final height of 15 storeys, and the northern tower currently stands at 6 storeys, with just four more levels to go before work begins on the mechanical penthouse.
Once construction of the development is complete, residents of the building will have access to a large communal courtyard featuring a series of walking paths. The development is located within easy access of Highways 407 and 404. For York Region Transit users, the new Cedarland Station on VIVA's Highway 7 Rapidway is located immediately southeast of the development and set to enter service in the Summer.
