With August now upon us, many Torontonians are counting down to the start of the 2014 Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), a longstanding Summer tradition in the city. Attendees of this year's CNE will notice a slight change in scenery form last year's event, due to the construction site for Hotel X, a new high-rise hotel rising near the east end of the grounds, an area which has traditionally been used for parking or the midway, or both.
Developed by Exhibition Place and The Library Hotel Collection, and built by Brookfield Multiplex, the 27-storey hotel features a design by NORR Architects in cooperation with New York-based Stephen B Jacobs Group. Hotel X's tower portion is now over four storeys in height, while the low-rise podium on the southwest corner of Newfoundland Drive and Princes' Boulevard now sits above grade.
In the image below, captured from Ontario Place, south of Newfoundland Drive, we can see the tower portion of the hotel rising from across Lake Shore Boulevard, with the growing high-rise cluster of Liberty Village buildings visible in the background.
Exhibition Place hosts dozens of events per year, and Hotel X aims to capitalize on accommodations and hosting needs for the various events onsite and int he surrounding areas. The 406-suite hotel will include amenities like a sports club with indoor tennis, volleyball, and squash courts, as well as a rooftop bar and restaurant on the 27th floor with panoramic views of the city skyline, Toronto Islands, and Lake Ontario.
