Despite the crippling ice storm and bitter cold temperatures over the holidays, construction is moving along unabated at Freed Developments’ Thompson Residences, a 15-storey condominium being built at 621 King Street West, just east of Bathurst. We stopped by the site last week for a quick (and snowy) walk around the perimeter to give you a better look at the project’s recent progress.
The design for Thompson Residences features a relatively standard rectilinear floor layout, but that regularity will be well disguised by a uniquely articulated façade. Montréal-based Saucier + Perrotte Architects’ use of offset 'protruding drawer' sections will create a staggered pattern certain to contrast well with the surrounding built form of the trendy King and Bathurst neighbourhood. Currently standing five storeys in height at the building’s west end, we will not have a clear picture of the offset effect until the glazing of the façade materializes.
While the bulk of the building faces the hustle and bustle of King Street West, a small portion fronts out on to the adjacent Stewart Street, directly across from Freed’s Thompson Hotel, from where this project takes its name.
Once complete, the 408-unit development will feature striking modern common areas, like lobby and amenity space, courtesy of Toronto-based interior design firm Burdifilek. Residents of the building will have access to a rooftop lounge and bar overlooking the Toronto skyline, complete with one of the continent's longest perimeter overflow pools.
