As Toronto's downtown core continues to burst at the seams with the city's rush to intensify, certain projects stand out from the pack. Ice Condominiums at York Centre does just that. Breaking from the usual glass box skyscraper design, Ice is bringing a striking organic asthetic to this section of downtown, south of Front Street. Squeezed between Bremner Boulevard and the Gardiner Expressway, Ice adds a combined total 1,345 condo units to this neighbourhood.
Ice Condos construction, to the left of Maple Leaf Square:
Formerly a collection of surface parking lots serving attractions like the Rogers Centre, CN Tower and the Waterfront, this area south of Union Station has seen one of the city's most dramatic shifts in purpose and character. Along with the 57 and 67-storey Ice Condos, projects like Ten York, 33 Bay, Southcore Financial Centre and RBC Waterpark Place III will continue to realign the way we perceive and use this vital area of the city.
Construction on Ice has been going on for some time and work on the architectsAlliance-designed buildings should be complete in the winter of 2014. One of the most significant things about Ice is its planned connection to the PATH system which connects businesses, attractions, transit and various residential properties around the downtown core through a pedestrain network. The increasingly dense and interwoven layers of this neighbourhood will prove to be an asset, as more people are choosing to live close to where they work and play.
