Tucked into the financial district, the Montreal Trust Tower at 11 King Street West is overshadowed by other, much larger members of its modernist cohort. At a time when the scale of office developments were growing ever larger, the small stature of the building and its fine palate of materials became its primary attraction. Opened in 1965, the tower was designed by Page + Steele and is among the best of the city's International Style commercial buildings. Serving as incubators of modernism in a city where the gravity of conservatism restrained innovation, the firm brought the contemporary into a city unaccustomed to forward-looking design.
