Continuing on our search for places to escape the Toronto heat this summer has taken UrbanToronto eastwards, towards the popular Sandbanks Provincial Park. Sandbanks has a long history as a popular summer vacation spot, however it has not seen substantial development in a number of decades, with many urbanites choosing to head north rather than make the drive east on the increasingly busy 401. Sandbanks Summer Village is looking to attract attention to the region once again, and UrbanToronto decided to spend some time at the development just before the summer rush hits to see what all the commotion is about.

The summer village occupies a substantial parcel of land located on East Lake, just north of Sandbanks Provincial Park. The project allows owners of the individual cottages to rent out their properties when they're not in use, providing an additional source of income to cover purchasing costs. The corporation will maintain the land, amenities and manage the unit in your absence. Similar to a condominium restrictions do apply, dictating what you can and cannot do on your land, and ensuring aesthetic continuity.

While the site is most definitely in operation, construction is still in progress; a number of cottages have been built, with others clearly on the way. The contemporary aesthetic is not your typical cottage style, a look and level of comfort that is carried through to the interiors. The individual units and project as a whole cater to urbanites that enjoy being outdoors but don't necessarily want to give up the comforts of home.

The southern section's meadow and sparsely-treed landscape is in contrast to the northern section, where bungalows are being built amidst the existing forest. Woodchips from the trees removed during construction are being placed in lieu of pavement, and an extensive nature trail is in the works.

The waterfront along East Lake is typical of the region; extensive farmlands and rocky shores are familiar to those who have stayed in Sandbanks previously. The windy conditions stirred up quite a swell on the day we visited.

Amenities at Sandbanks primarily cater towards families with children - the pool was a popular hangout when we were there, as was the pavilion next door, where family friendly movies were screened each night. The playground was ready to go, while the putting green was in the works.

Next weekend marks the official kick-off of summer for many families who are looking to find an easy escape from the city heat. Sandbanks Summer Village caters to those who are looking for a comfortable, affordable vacation home with 80-acres of cared-for amenities. The location within Prince Edward County allows for day trips to the provincial park (a day pass was included with the visit), and if you decide to leave the kids behind, you can easily hop on one of many wine tours of the local vineyards.
