Located within the Fashion District, there lies a refreshing escape from the dense and complex urban fabric of the downtown core. Taken by Forum member, monkeyronin, today's Photo of the Day features the lush inner courtyard of 401 Richmond Street West. Originally the home of the Macdonald Manufacturing Company, this historic warehouse was constructed in five stages from 1899 through 1923. The building was eventually purchased by the Zeidler Family in 1994. Recognizing the need for affordable and creative workspace in the city, they converted the building into a diverse arts and office centre. Today, the building is home to over 140 tenants featuring a vibrant mixed-use community. The inner courtyard provides a relaxing common area which includes vertical gardens, birch trees, and flower beds. This award winning transformation reminds us of the constant evolution of the city and integrating history with planning for the future.
