Construction progress on MaRs Discovery District phase 2 has been moving along at an incredible pace following a prolonged and painful delay of nearly three years. When complete, the building will provide close to 800,000 square feet of office and laboratory space for experts and entrepreneurs in the medical, engineering, technology and social innovation fields. The 20-storey addition features designs by Bregman + Hamann, while the College Street building was designed by Adamson + Associates. The two contemporary buildings wrap around the wonderfully restored Toronto General Hospital-College Wing, a heritage building from 1913 designed by the brilliant duo of Darling + Pearson.
The new phase 2 building won't open for a while yet, however the revamped TTC entrance on the southeast corner of College and University is to re-open any day now. Forum member drum118 stopped by the site and snapped a few photos of the Queen's Park Station entrance, a glass-wrapped structure that continues the same aesthetic we saw at the Bay Station — Cumberland entrance when it opened a few years ago.
While they've yet to top off the tower, cladding and windows arrived earlier last month, and were being installed on the lower floors on the south side of the building.
The opening of phase 2 will complete the MaRs Discovery District's ambitious plans, bringing a close to the extensive expansion of the organization. Despite the substantial construction work occurring next door, the beauty of the heritage building has persevered, and remains a draw for photographers, tourists and locals alike; the skilled restoration of the building and the outstanding landscaping job on College Street no doubt contribute to the appeal.
