The past month has seen quite a bit of discussion around projects in the north end of the city; Emerald City was featured last week, and Discovery 1 & 2 at Concord Park Place received a bit of attention as well. Today we've received a couple images of the newly placed cranes for Metropia, Pure Plaza and Bazis' Emerald Park Condos, located at Yonge and Sheppard.

Designed by Roy Varacalli, the towers will eventually reach 32 and 42 storeys, with a total of 550 units. The developer expects construction to be completed by 2013, so we can look forward to a flurry of activity on this site throughout the coming year.

The towers will definitely bring something unique and fresh to the burgeoning skyline of North York City Centre, however their design isn't entirely one-of-a-kind; Bazis made a tidy fortune in their native Kazakhstan before coming to Toronto, where Roy Varacalli has already designed the Emerald Towers in Astana, uncanningly similar to those coming to North York.

Here's a question to spark some discussion: in an increasingly globalized world, do you foresee multi-national developers such as Bazis adopting specific design motifs, and do you think these designs are applicable regardless of country, culture or market?
