It gives the impression that the panels are scratched or damaged. If more panels were covered in the pattern or the lines were heavier, I think it would actually work better. Or simply an embossing or debossing would work well with the panel remaining all black.

There's something alternative 90's about it that appeals to me somewhat...

It's like ivy growing along a part of the facade. The idea could have been better executed, but I like it. I hope we see more art integrated into the facades of buildings.
