Why Does Hamilton Constantly Get Screwed?

Granted city planners have made a number of fatal mistakes in the past (one-way street inner-city expressways, constant public transit cuts, 1960's downtown 'urban renewal', etc)..

But this time, city staff & planners seemed to finally have it right with a Downtown Stadium, until THIS:

Feds then province cut West Harbour funds

* * * * * * * * * * *

I am curious to hear Your theories as to why Hamilton always gets the ol' shaft!?
- Is it a scheme to ensure Toronto remains the only true urban centre in Ontario?
-Does someone in the Federal ranks get off on seeing Hamilton fail?
-Is it the Province's secret plan project to make Hamilton a new mega Community Housing Project?
-Is this a political diversion and excuse to take Hamilton's LRT funding and hand it over to Peel's Hurontario LRT?

What do you guys think?
 
This whole debate on the West Harbour site should have been decided by city council a long time ago. City council dilly-dallied and seemed to be spending more and more time looking at the merits of East Mountain when they should have simply said that the stadium is going to West Harbour period. The West Harbour stadium funding only existed because the Pan Am Games needed an athletics facility. The moment the athletics left is the moment Pan Am funding became less sensible. There is no budget to build an expensive stadium for a few soccer games. The whole "where should the stadium go" debate and the thought that the stadium was for the Ti-Cats should never have come up. Hamilton City Council screwed up by letting the Ti-Cats have a spot in the drivers seat. The fact that Hamilton is getting any money at all is more surprising considering the Pan Am games weren't really hunting for places to put soccer.

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!! Jeeeeez I was following this story cause it was related to my summer work. This is really upsetting! Hamilton needs downtown revitalization, and this project was perfect!!! How does putting it in a distant suburb conform to the Growth Plan for the GGH, or any other legislation?? BULLSHIT!
 
Hamilton is Ontario's punching bag. Everyone in Ontario makes fun at Hamilton not just Torontonians. It's your blue collar 101 smelly industrial city. It's Canada's Cleveland...............it get's no respect.
This is also not helped by the fact that it has large NDP support. Ottawa and Queen's Park have no vested interest in helping Hamilton unlike Ottawa and London.
 
Hmm. I don't know anyone who pokes fun at Hamilton in Toronto. Scarborough, definitely, but Hamilton just isn't on the radar. Which is probably the real issue.
 
Hamilton is it's own worst enemy, in many respects. Nothing will change until this does.
 
This is the CFL's and David Braleys fault. This violates places to grow. I want to see a statement from McGuinty first though. If Hamilton can do this, all bets are off for York and Durham.

PS. Tony is right. Only a surburb would do this. This to me makes Hamilton a GTA suburb. The GTHA is in full force.
 
How does this violate places to grow? It's a stadium that will be used 15-20 times per year at most and it certainly won't be a catalyst for massive suburban development.

Also, Toronto toyed with the idea of putting the Dome at Woodbine and Downsview. So it's not just Hamilton. If the NFL ever comes to Toronto you're going to hear a lot of debates about the merits of a downtown stadium versus a suburban stadium.
 
Many of Hamilton's problems stem from the decisions their urban planners made. They adopted policies that have eroded the city and little progress is being made to this day. They screw themselves by letting the suburbs rule.

Pfft, that was the 80's. It is not the 80's anymore.

Besides, just because someone else has done something in the past, doesn't necessarily mean that it is right or that it is a good idea.

And yes, I think building a stadium in the middle of nowhere would violate the purpose of Places to Grow.

It is funny that the Conservatives are supposed to be about small government and yet they are such control freaks, trying to influence local issues and control local politics.
 
Katz/AEG.....

Darryl Katz has a deal in place to run copps and what was the new stadium at the West Harbour.

They have a 4 year timeframe to Bring the NHL to Hamilton. Katz's Oilers are struggling to bring the Oilers a new stadium. The Oilers could end up in Hamilton and then the TiCats become an after thought.


The City could also vote no on the east mountain and not give the Cats anything. Also demolish IW and force the Cats to play out of a high school.


They claim Halifax or Moncton would support them. Please. There is no money in Atlantic Canada. The CFL would fold the Cats and we return to the CFL we know and love, the one that loses even more money than right now and had to expand to the US to stay alive.

Yes, it's like a bigger Brantford in that sense.
