Whitney Block

As far as I'm aware the complex is nearly 100% leased, so I don't think this is being sold (yes, you can sell a 100% leased building though ...) who owns the buildings though?

They're entirely government use but I'm not sure if they own them as well

ps - it would be great if someone could get some pictures of the revitalized square at the base!

What do you mean 100% leased? Did they figure out a way to occupy the tower?

I'm pretty sure that the Crown owns the building.

Had no idea this building wasn't being used. But I admire it all the time. It's a stunner, especially up close!

Ontario (Ontario Realty Corp.) owns these buildings with the Whitney Block being the cream of the crop. Anyone who is anyone has their office there and therefore security is one of the tightest in the city.

As quite a few people have already mentioned, it's just the top of the building i.e. the tower portion (7-8? floors at the top) that are not occupied. I very much doubt it's worth the money the make them usable - they're very small floors - I would guess the total would be less then 20-30 thousand square feet.

Is the Whitney Block used for anything, yet?

For possible classrooms for example?

The Whitney Block is 100% full of government offices as it has been since 1926. Only the tower itself is unused due to the aforementioned fire code issues. Using it for classrooms is a non-starter as the only entrance to the tower is through the Premier's Office complex on the sixth floor of the Whitney Block itself.

....and as has been mentioned, the square footage of the floors is very limited. One class per floor would be the limit so spending the many millions required for the contemplated external and enclosed staircase is unlikely in the extreme.

Maybe so but the fire code did become more stringent between 1932 and 1968 when it was mothballed. Ah well. It does look good at least.

I toured it in 2008 as part of United Way fundraiser. The Premier's Office (second from the top the top floor being a mechanical floor) still has it's flooring and some of its crown moldings although much was smashed out when the sprinkler system was put in.
