This is the former home of Union Carbide in Welland. This site will be developed in the future but in the meantime some 500,000 tons of synthetic graphite have been located and will be extracted for use in the electric car market. The Adjacent Lakeside Steel plant was also purchased and will be used to process the graphite.
Mining sized excavation equipment, more of which will be brought in once the actual graphite is exposed.
Here are some drone shots I took back in February and March.
A large 108 ton excavator.
JMX was onsite wrapping up demolition of the foundation.
The scale of the operation will require large excavators and haul trucks.
Former Lakeside Steel facility still standing.
This part of the Welland Canal was last used by ships in 1972. In 1973, the straighter & wider Welland Bypass opened about 2.5km to the East. The old channel sees recreational use today.
