Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Some people are always going on about STC being redeveloped - why not just build a massive TTC bus garage in its place? (lol) And hey, when the RT knocks out in a few years, at least people won't be complaining about the double transfer (extra lol)

One can start laughing even louder after counting the operating cost of all those buses trying to replace what should be a high-capacity trunk line.

But things getting screwed up for the worst aren't just happening on this corridor: the relief line got totally screwed up and almost certainly won't be completed in time, Yonge north will still deal with the 2000 buses every day for the foreseeable future because of the Ontario Line's inherent design, The waterfront will develop and we'll be left with another CityPlace fiasco, Eglinton west may not get built and gridlock will continue to exist there, finch may never get proper capacity improvements east of Finch West station, RER is at risk of not being electrified, the Kitchener Corridor will never see frequent service, Sheppard...well, Sheppard east is fine, but we'll never see the development the corridor should have gotten on the western end. Fare integration won't happen for the next 4 years, significantly reducing the impact of RER, and wasting the potential of Downsview Park station.

What's worse is that all of this will have knock-on effects for the entire system — Either the anti-streetcar lobby will prevent the city from exercising an additional order, or the province won't provide funding for extra vehicles (Because the Ontario line will solve everything...), buses will be diverted to line 3, leaving the rest of the system completely capacity constrained. We risk losing the 502, 503, and 511 in their entirety and significant service on the 501 and 505, all in the form of ridership increases on the main routes. We will likely also lose service from all the major bus routes if resources have to be diverted away from downtown and the rest of the city to run a line 3 replacement.

This upload was rushed and ill-thought out. This isn't a 4 year delay for transit progress in the city, it's closer to 8 years. Once the tories are ousted, the next party in charge will likely not do everything in their power to fix the mess they got us in, and that will take at least 4 years to complete at best — fix design work for the Ontario line, bringing back a subway on that corridor, order new streetcars, build new bus garages, fix the route networks. Even then, damage will be done. We'll likely be stuck with a shitty RER contract, lose important ridership from fare integration practices, among so many other risks. Ford may not be one big cancelling machine, but the effects of his administration will set us so far back that we'll be worse off than where Harris left us (and I can't even believe I'm saying that...)

Help us Andy Byford, you're our only hope...

regardless of whether they actually withheld info or not, Matlow is being an asshole by bringing this up at the critical juncture and potentially fuelling another generation of decisive debates.
just get the thing designed and built already for gods sake!!!!!

To hell with due diligence!

Just think how much more effective and financially prudent it would have been to just ask a 10 year old what to do in 2005 when this thread began. Transit riders would already have been enjoying their “really super cool” train ride completed 5 years ago at 1/3 the cost of whatever latest incarnation exists as a twinkle in someone’s eye.

Welp, this thread is gonna be active until 2030 at least. That’s 25 years! Maybe this is just a conspiracy in increase UT’s ad revenue. Hmmm

Maybe instead of being angry at Matlow, you should be angry at Tory and friends for doing this in the first place?
The key that is never reported on is the June 2012 Metrolinx report - showing that the Rob Ford plan of connecting Eglinton to SRT was the best.
This report was likely started shortly after the Ford-McGuinty Memo of Understanding (MOI) on March 31, 2011. I'm pretty sure a draft was available late 2011 - although I don't have proof of this, but I do know the reports often sit as draft for a long time before being finalized).
  1. So what happened while this report was hidden from Council by the Liberals.
  2. Ford plan was never discussed again.
  3. Stintz was convinced to cancel Ford plan and go back to transfer LRT.
  4. Stintz and Glenn DeBaermaker convinced by Scarborough Liberals to pursue OneCity and subway to STC.
  5. Council defeated this and reverted by to transfer LRT.
  6. Liberals promote Mitzi Hunter as the subway champion.
  7. Federal money, and transfer of provincial money to subway approved.
  8. Mayoralty election campaign begins with subway being the unanimous option.
  9. When June 2012 report finally released, the political environment had already settled on the subway being the preferred option.
The only thing Tory can be blamed for is introducing SmartTrack.

Back in 2011/12, we made a deal. Rob Ford must be defeated at all costs. We are now paying those costs.

Or, begin building the subway 15 years ago, when the construction costs were lower. Would be completed 5 years ago, too.

Who has failed to report it? It was widely reported at the time.

It was the 'best' in that it was all underground/separated. What you consistently fail to mention is that it would've taken all the available funding for every other transit project. Everything else would've been "privately funded" (including the Sheppard extension and a new Finch subway within 10 years lol), which had absolutely no chance of ever happening.

1) Miller and the provincial government agree on a Scarborough LRT, fully funded by the province.
2) Ford rails against it as an election tactic, get's it canceled. Him and upper levels of government push a subway.
3) 10 years later another Ford changes the plan and pushes it back by years.
