TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

My sister-in-law spotted 4563 on a train passing through Sudbury yesterday afternoon.

^So many Flexities on the move! It could have been 4563, which was delivered to Hillcrest yesterday, or 4564 just arriving in Toronto.

It appears that 4403 and at least one other car have been shipped from La Pocatiere to Kingston.

Anyone remember Buffalo TV - "It's 11:00.... do you know where your trams are?" ;-)

Why would a car end up at Kingston from QC??

4562 is tracking and doing on street testing

4561 being burning up the tracks the last few days.

4576 still MIA after 19 days.

Perhaps La Pocatiere doesn’t have the capability or parts inventory to do whatever cosmetic/interior refit is needed after the cars are put back together? Or, the test equipment and track to give them a final QC check before they are returned?

That's a costly operation doing it that way. Time to load and off load will eat up a lot of time. Handling anything twice or more is very costly and that eats into the bottom line at the end of the day. It also add extra time to do it.

What every kind of profit BBD was expecting make on TTC order has gone out the window. Trying to keep the cost overrun down is number on thing these days for BBD as well getting the monkey off their back ASP.
 
^ We all have funed and ranted at Bombardier over the course of this Order, and while it may have looked earlier that Bombardier was getting away with thjngs, and TTC had little ability to claim proper damages (the penalties seemed pretty small), at this point one wonders how much of a loss Bombardier has taken. Certainly, CP and CN have made out like bandits with all the extra transportation provided.

Only 5 more months until I see new streetcars finally trundling up and down College and Dundas!

There is a lot of extra cost that has eaten the profit line away. Labour cost is 2-4 time more costly doing the work in Canada than Mexico. Then there is the cost of material, depending how it was order and from where. Cheaper to buy off shores than roll at home in some cases and no idea how Mexico gets its material, let alone mills. Flying things in is more costly than shipping by sea or rail. Shipping by sea only works when the Welland Channel is open to the docks in Thunder Bay, otherwise, by rail or truck from Montreal to Thunder Bay. Cost to build the expansion at Kingston and other locations in Canada. The cost to fix the welds on 67 cars most likely wipe out the bottom line. The money paid to TTC was a drop in the bucket for BBD.

As for CN/CP shipping cost, was in the cost to build the cars from day one, but all the extra moving cost wasn't. Those extra cost would most likely be in line with other types of movements and can't see any price gouging by the RR.

One thing TTC has learn from this mess, got to beef up the penalties clauses, as well other clauses to protect them at the end of the day. $38? million back charge was too light considering it should been a minimum of 10% contract price, with a sliding scale that should go higher than 10%. Have seen options where the bidder has earn extra cost by delivering X early than contracted for to 50% lost of contract for being late.

Both 4400 and 4403 are currently at Millhaven for some unknown reason
