The name is "XO" in the "hugs and kisses" sense but I always think of the sauce, which is named after the cognac. So it's supposed to evoke a luxurious image.

This style is called Stack Bond, or at least that's what it's aping with real bricks. You don't use stack bond when the wall is load-bearing (you use standard running bond), but if it's decorative, then you can play more with your bricks. Here, where they're not even bricks, why not play a bit? In the Backyard Condos project near where I live, the brick-patterned precast was all stained after the fact, and you'd never know now, no-one walking by would ever suspect it's not real brick.
