Toronto Urban Design Awards 2009

Winners of the 2009 Toronto Urban Design Awards announced

TORONTO, Sept. 21 /CNW/ - At a ceremony at the Palais Royale this evening, Mayor David Miller addressed members of the design and development community and celebrated the winners of the 2009 Toronto Urban Design Awards. From an impressive 117 submissions containing a variety of built projects, visions and master plans, as well as student works, the jury selected 18 projects for Awards of Excellence and Honourable Mentions.

The 2009 jury is made up of renowned design professionals, including Ian Chodikoff, Editor - Canadian Architect Magazine; Jack Diamond, Principal - Diamond + Schmitt Architects Inc.; Eha Naylor, Principal - ENVision - The Hough Group Limited; and Michael Van Valkenburgh, Principal - Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc.

The 2009 winners are:

Note that there was no award given in the "Elements" category. The judges felt that none of this year's submissions deserved their recognition.

Also note that there was no Award of Excellence presented in the student category. The judges stated that the student work left much to be desired and took their time at the podium to chide the students for the inferiority of the submissions (causing rumblings of displeasure from the audience).

The judges also took time to complain about the poor work seen in the Design Awards in past years and complain about the landscaping of one of the awards winners.

The submissions were fantastic and I do agree that all of the winners deserved their awards. But the judging panel was unprofessional and frankly embarrassing at a ceremony designed to celebrate the city.
 
To be fair though, they've always had problems with student submissions - this isn't the first year. That said, the message could have been delievered with a bit more grace.
