Oh, good, it's nice to finally see something other than concrete down in that pit. Hopefully this is just the start of ongoing finishing work throughout the moat area.

For real, they should at least make the platform solid so no one is encouraged to duck under that side.

No. Having a hollow under the platform edge allows anyone falling onto the tracks an escape or safety zone, should they fall or pushed down onto the tracks.
It will be move once the new platform is ready to go into service. They need to remove it to allow people to get under the overhang if they end up on the track for what every reason as well staff if they have a train coming at them when it should not be as a safety protection.
Where can it be relocated. There is a platform on either side of the train. If it can't be under either platform, where would it go?
What if Union station becomes Spanish solution? Where would the third rail be?
