Actually the workers at the Great Pyramid were taken care of quite well (for the times). The idea of using slaves is a myth.

Everytime I open this thread I hope to see a massive steel column sitting there ready to install.

I see that now.

Also, the workforce for the pyramids is estimated to have been some 20,000. Of course, they didn't have a crane...or even a canary.
